Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: What subjects do I need in O’level to study medical or health-related courses?
A: Most programmes require five credits in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. However, some courses may allow slight variations depending on the institution.
Q: Can I study Medicine, Nursing, or Pharmacy without Physics?
A: No. These courses require Physics, Chemistry, and Biology compulsorily. Lack of Physics disqualifies you from most medical programmes.
Q: Can I combine WAEC and NECO for Medicine or Nursing?
A: Yes, as long as the combination does not exceed two sittings and includes all required subjects with credit passes.
Q: Do all universities accept the same requirements for medical courses?
A: No. Many institutions have special considerations (remarks), higher O’level expectations, or additional Direct Entry criteria. Always check the brochure for each school offering your chosen course.
Q: What is the minimum UTME score for Medicine, Pharmacy, and Nursing?
A: Cut-off marks vary by school and are released after UTME. Generally, candidates need a very high score, especially for federal universities and competitive programmes.
Q: Is Mathematics compulsory for all medical and health science courses?
A: Yes, Mathematics is required as an O’level credit for nearly all programmes. A few health-related courses may accept equivalent alternatives, but it depends on the institution.
Q: Can Direct Entry students apply for Medicine and Surgery?
A: Only a few institutions accept DE for Medicine, and requirements are often strict, usually needing excellent A-level, JUPEB, or IJMB grades in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
Q: Are there polytechnic equivalents for medical courses?
A: Yes. Courses like Medical Laboratory Technology, Dental Technology, Public Health Technology, Prosthetics & Orthotics, and Nutrition & Dietetics are available in some polytechnics.
