Candidates registering for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) have been cautioned against providing false information or violating registration guidelines, as such actions could attract severe penalties.

Professor Ishaq Oloyede, JAMB’s Registrar, gave this warning on Monday as the registration enters its third week. The exercise started on 26th January.

Speaking with journalists recently, Professor Oloyede made it clear that registration fraud is a serious offence with harsh consequences.

According to him, candidates caught breaking the rules could be banned from writing the UTME for up to three years. Their names may also be published in national newspapers and sent to other examination bodies.

“Registration infraction is a serious offence,” the Registrar stated, noting that candidates may be barred from sitting the UTME for up to three years.

“In addition, names of defaulters may be published by the Board in the national dailies as well as circulated to other public examination bodies.”

Professor Oloyede added that serious offenders could be handed over to the EFCC, ICPC, or the Police for prosecution.

He also spoke about the attestation form that candidates sign during registration. This document requires them to confirm that all information they provide is true and accurate.

“The attestation clause, now an integral part of the application documents, has been incorporated into the registration process due to lessons learned from previous legal battles with candidates,” Professor Oloyede explained.

He said the attestation helps confirm that candidates’ academic records and other details are genuine, which helps prevent fraud.

The Registrar urged candidates to be honest and avoid providing false information, warning that doing so could jeopardise their chances of gaining admission to any tertiary institution.

JAMB said these strict measures are meant to protect the integrity of the exam and ensure fairness for all candidates.
