The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced a new policy that will require all candidates registering for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to declare their current admission status.
According to the board as of Tuesday, 4 November, 2025 when this announcement was publicized, the aim of this implementation is part of efforts to restrain impersonation, double admissions, and other forms of malpractice linked to candidates who are already in tertiary institutions.
In essence, what is required under the new directive is every applicant stating their admission status be it that they have already been admitted into a university, polytechnic, college of education, or any other higher institution during the 2026 UTME registration process.
JAMB explained that the policy became necessary after investigations revealed that over 90 percent of impersonation and examination malpractice cases in previous UTME cycles involved candidates already enrolled in tertiary institutions.
Furthermore, this policy will provide a helping hand in such a way that only genuine admission seekers sit for the forthcoming UTME, and that candidates are only admitted through JAMB with proper documentation of their admission being available in the national admission database.
